What You Need to Know About Replacement Rain Gutters
Rain is not a friend of your home and its foundation. If rain is not able to properly run off your roof, it will seep through and cause damage to the interior of your home. Even if the rain doesn’t seep into your roof, if it’s not appropriately channeled away from the base, it will work its way down to the foundation of the home and cause tremendous erosion to the base of your structure. This watershed will eventually cause catastrophic water damage to a home.
Now that I’ve got your attention, here are the three most important things you need to know about replacement rain gutters.
1. Size of Replacement Rain Gutters
The most common residential gutters are Ogee, also known as K- Style. The most common sizes are 5” and 6”. The larger your roof surface area, the more significant rain gutter system you’re going to need. Keep in mind that if your home has a steep roof or experiences heavy rainfall, you will need a larger gutter system as well. A good rule of thumb is that for every thirty to forty feet of rain gutters, you should put one downspout so that it will be able to handle the rain.
2. Installation of Replacement Rain Gutters
Like anything in your home, if it’s not installed by a professional who knows what they’re doing, you’re asking for trouble, big trouble. For instance, a rain gutter system needs to be installed on the structural supports of the home, especially if you’ve chosen a heavier material for your rain gutter system. Keep in mind that at some point a lot of water is going to be running through it and water is heavy, all the more so when coupled with debris and heavy winds.
3. Maintenance of Rain Gutters
Last but certainly not least is the tender love and care that your rain gutter system needs. Your gutter system needs to be maintained, or it won’t work. Depending on the amount of heavy rain and trees around your house you’ll need to check and clean your rain gutter system periodically throughout the year. It’s also a good idea to check the system to make sure it’s maintaining a nice snug fit to your roof.
